Polarimetry Techniques at Optical and Infrared Wavelengths
The techniques and components used to measure both linear and circular polarization at wavelengths from 0.3 μm to 20 μm are reviewed. Some emphasis is given to the implementation of polarimetry on the latest generation of large-aperture telescopes and some of the difficulties being encountered are addressed.
متن کاملThe case for OH suppression at near-infrared wavelengths
We calculate the advances in near-infrared astronomy made possible through the use of fibre Bragg gratings to selectively remove hydroxyl emission lines from the night sky spectrum. Fibre Bragg gratings should remove OH lines at high resolution (R = 10, 000), with high suppression (30dB) whilst maintaining high throughput (≈ 90 per cent) between the lines. Devices currently under construction s...
متن کاملRugate filters for OH-suppressed imaging at near-infrared wavelengths
Ground based observations at near-infrared wavelengths are severely affected by atmospheric OH bands. Many authors have recognized the potential gains in sensitivity from suppressing these features. Dispersive instruments show some promise but are both expensive and complicated to build. OH suppression filters using single (Herbst 1994) or periodic notches (Jones et al. 1997) have the advantage...
متن کاملSensor Technology at Submillimeter Wavelengths for Space Applications
Our universe is most luminous at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths (100 GHz – 10 THz) after the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. This region of the electromagnetic spectrum provides critical tracers for the study of a wide range of astrophysical and planetary phenomena. This spectral range contains information on the origin of the planets, stars, galaxies, and clusters; the...
متن کاملSilicon photonic crystal thermal emitter at near-infrared wavelengths
Controlling thermal emission with resonant photonic nanostructures has recently attracted much attention. Most of the work has concentrated on the mid-infrared wavelength range and/or was based on metallic nanostructures. Here, we demonstrate the experimental operation of a resonant thermal emitter operating in the near-infrared (≈1.5 μm) wavelength range. The emitter is based on a doped silico...
